Rivalry Heats Up
Virginia 529 Sponsors Virginia & Virginia Tech Football and Basketball Games

The Virginia 529 College Savings Plan is proud to sponsor the Commonwealth Cup football game on Saturday, November 27, 2010. The highly anticipated game, in which state rivals Virginia and Virginia Tech play one another, takes place over Thanksgiving weekend in Blacksburg.

Flaming the two schools’ longtime fight for top spot will be The Rivalry – Virginia 529 is building on the longstanding Rivalry between the two schools to encourage Hokie and Wahoo fans to embrace school spirit - and spotlight the importance of planning and saving for college with the help of Virginia 529. Since 2000, thousands of Virginia Tech and Virginia students have used Virginia 529 program benefits to help fund their higher education. The Plan has distributed more than $150 million in Virginia Prepaid Education ProgramSM (VPEP) and Virginia Education Savings TrustSM (VEST) benefits at Virginia Tech and Virginia since distributions began in 2000.

The Commonwealth Cup football game is just one aspect of the revived Rivalry between Virginia and Virginia Tech. Virginia 529, a new partner as of 2010 of Virginia Tech and Virginia, also sponsors other intercollegiate competitions, including both Rivalry basketball games - the first on December 5 in Blacksburg and again on February 19 in Charlottesville. The two schools’ long playing history is intensified by Virginia Tech and Virginia’s positions as the only two Virginia schools facing off in the ACC Coastal Division.

The Virginia College Savings Plan will be on hand at the Rivalry football and basketball games to provide information about its four tax-advantaged college savings programs – as well as games and special prizes including the chance to register to win a $529 Virginia 529 college savings account.
