BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech athletics department announced Sunday that it will be commemorating the silver anniversary season of the popular broadcasting tandem of Bill Roth and Mike Burnop, who are getting ready to kick off their 25th season as the radio duo for Virginia Tech football broadcasts.
The athletics department has commissioned a commemorative print by noted artist George Wills of Roth and Burnop to celebrate their milestone season. Also, The Legends of Blacksburg and Coldwell Banker Townside Realtors are sponsoring a countdown of Roth’s and Burnop’s top-25 Virginia Tech football moments. Each Tuesday throughout the season, some of the most exciting moments in Tech history will be unveiled on hokiesports.com/billandmike. The top moment will be released Tuesday, Nov. 20, before the Tech-UVa football game.
After the final moment is unveiled, fans can register and vote for their top moment. Fan voting will be released at the Hokies’ 2012 bowl game.
Each fan who registers will receive a free electronic copy of the commemorative print. The grand prizewinner of a drawing gets a free dinner with Roth and Burnop at the Virginia Tech athletics sponsor recognition dinner next spring, along with an assortment of other prizes.
The duo began broadcasting football games in 1988 after then Tech AD Dave Braine hired Roth to be the play-by-play announcer for Tech broadcasts. Roth replaced Jeff Charles, who had left to take a job at East Carolina. Burnop, a former Tech tight end and Tech Hall of Famer, had worked with Charles for five years as the color analyst and stayed on board following Roth’s hiring.
The Hokies open their season on Labor Day night, Sept. 3, against Georgia Tech in a game that will mark Roth’s and Burnop’s 299th as a broadcasting tandem. Kickoff for the game is slated for 8 p.m.
