    White Helmets to be worn by football team vs. Austin Peay to be put up for auction
    Funds donated to Herma's Readers

    BLACKSBURG — The Virginia Tech football team announced today that 50 white helmets worn during the Hokies’ “White Effect” game vs. Austin Peay this Saturday (1:30 PM) will be auctioned off online at with all proceeds going to Herma’s Readers. Herma’s Readers is a non-profit organization that promotes the power of reading and literacy to youngsters during their formative years, grades K-3.

    The white helmets feature two Hokie Tracks on both sides of the helmet. All fans are encouraged to wear white in support of the “White Effect” game and to promote literacy in the State of Virginia. “White Effect” shirts are available for purchase from the University Bookstores including the University Bookstore on-campus, Volume Two Bookstore in University Mall and the Hokie Shops in Lane Stadium, and are also available online at

    The online auction will begin at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, Sept. 6, and will continue through Friday, Sept. 14 at 5 p.m. Anyone wishing to bid on the helmet can do so by logging onto There will be a minimum bid of $400 and all orders will have a $25 shipping fee added to the end of the bid.
