Virginia Tech selected for Hyundai Sun Bowl
Hokies to face UCLA on Dec. 31 in El Paso

BLACKSBURG - For the just the second time in program history - and the first time in 67 seasons - Virginia Tech is headed to El Paso, Texas, for a postseason football bowl game.

Virginia Tech (8-4) will meet Pac-12 Conference representative and 17th-ranked UCLA (9-3) in the 80th Hyundai Sun Bowl at 2 p.m. EST (noon MT) on Tuesday, Dec. 31 in the 51,426-seat Sun Bowl Stadium. The game will be televised nationally by CBS for the 46th consecutive year.

It’s the 21st straight bowl appearance for the Hokies, the second-longest active streak in college football behind fellow ACC member Florida State (32).

“We are extremely excited to be coming to the Sun Bowl,” Virginia Tech head coach Frank Beamer said. “All my conversations with people who have been there have been extremely positive, and it is my understanding that the Sun Bowl people do an excellent job with their hospitality. It’s great for our kids and fans to be able to visit a different part of the country. The Sun Bowl was our first bowl in 1947, and it’s time to get back.”

Virginia Tech and UCLA will be meeting for the first time in football when they meet in the Hyundai Sun Bowl. It will be Tech’s fourth game against current Pac-12 members and the fourth against a team from the state of California.

Virginia Tech will be playing in El Paso for the second time as the 1946 Tech team played Cincinnati in the 1947 Sun Bowl on Jan. 1 of that season in the school’s first bowl game. This year’s game will be Virginia Tech’s 27th bowl game.

“We’re very excited to have the chance to go back to El Paso and the Sun Bowl,” said Jim Weaver, Virginia Tech Director of Athletics. “It was the first bowl game for Virginia Tech back in 1947 and we are looking forward to going back.”

Virginia Tech will be the designated visiting team in this game.
