With the 80th Hyundai Sun Bowl less than 24 hours away, both teams had one last public appearance with the locals and had a walk-thru before going through meetings one last time before meeting up on Tuesday.
In the morning, the Tech seniors got a chance to visit a local children’s hospital. Always, a highlight of the week, this year was no different as the players had a chance to interact with the kids and put a smile on their faces.
Later, the two head coaches met with the media for the final time before the teams gathered at the Judson F. Williams Convention Center for the Rotary Sun Bowl Team Luncheon. The players and coaches from both teams were highlighted at the luncheon and the broadcast team from CBS Sports joined in on the fun. Starters for each team were introduced as each player wore his game jersey. There was talk of the Hokies wearing all-maroon for the game, but because UCLA contemplated wearing its black uniforms (the Bruins ended up going with their powder blue jerseys) and Tech had to get the Sun Bowl patches put on, the team will wear maroon helmets, along with white jerseys and white pants.
There won’t be much more to report between now and game time. Shane Beamer and Sports Information Director Dave Smith had to go to a mandatory NCAA pre-game meeting to go over game timing and logistics and team got its first look at the Sun Bowl Stadium with a brief afternoon walk-thru. Upon returning back to the hotel, the seniors each spoke individually to the rest of the team about what their time at Tech meant and in a few minutes, the players will have a watch fitting session before going into an hour of special teams meetings and then offense/defense meetings.
The dress squad will have a dinner and then start packing the luggage truck that will make the long trip back to Blacksburg before being in their rooms for the 10 p.m. curfew. The team will depart for the stadium on Tuesday at 9:45 a.m. for the short ride over to the stadium. The Hokies and 17th-ranked Bruins will kick off at 12:15 p.m. local time, 2:15 p.m. on the East Coast. It will be the only college football game on during that time slot and can be seen nationally on CBS.
