Hokies Land Top 20 Signing Class, Good News For Carroll

BLACKSBURG – After landing a total of 26 student-athletes with the possibility of another addition still looming, Virginia Tech’s 2017 recruiting class ranked 16th in the nation according to 247Sports.

While such rankings can vary widely, the Hokies recorded a consensus Top 25 class with Scout putting Tech at No. 20 and ESPN ranking the second class of head coach Justin Fuente at No. 25. Using Scout rankings as a barometer, Tech tied for biggest improvement in the nation from 2016 to 2017 according to Campus Insiders, as the Hokies moved up 36 spots from their ranking a year ago. Colorado also moved up 36 spots to No. 29 in 2017.

Although Coach Fuente typically remains low-key about awarding scholarships to walk-on players, based on the social media reaction from his teammates, the addition of WR C.J. Carroll was met with heartfelt congratulations on Thursday evening.

A prep product of Our Lady of Good Counsel and a native of Olney, Maryland, Carroll was a key contributor for the Hokies on offense and special teams a year ago. He played in 13 games, catching 18 passes for 258 yards (14.3 avg.). He wore the honorary Beamer 25 jersey at Notre Dame, hauling in a career-long 62-yard catch and run as Tech rebounded from a pair of 17-point deficits to register a 34-31 victory.

While a host of way-too-early preseason polls for the 2017 season are already out, the Hokies came in at No. 25 in ESPN’s post-signing day poll. Three Virginia Tech opponents for the upcoming season were also ranked in that poll: (6) Clemson, (16) Miami and (22) West Virginia. Here’s a look at the full ESPN poll bit.ly/25VTpre17.
