Murrells Inlet, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a two-round total of 619 and is in 12th place at the General Jim Hackler Invitational at the 6,950 yard, par-72 TPC of Myrtle Beach in Murrells Inlet, S.C. on Sunday afternoon.
Redshirt senior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) and freshman Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 40th place at 154. Rhys Davies of East Tennessee State and Dustin Johnson of host Coastal Carolina lead the event at one-under-par 143. MacDonald's opening round one-over-par 73 was the low score of the day for the Hokies.
Sophomore Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) is tied for 45th at 155 and sophomore Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) is tied for 52nd place at 159. Junior Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) is in 56th place at 161 and freshman Will Oldham (Richmond, Va.) is playing the event as an individual and is tied for 58th at 154.
Tournament host Coastal Carolina leads the event at 582, four strokes ahead of second place Purdue. Kansas State is third at 591, Notre Dame is fourth at 593 and UNC Wilmington is fifth at 597. Louisville, North Florida, East Tennessee State, Central Florida and Furman round out the top 10 and Pepperdine is 11th at 612, seven strokes ahead of the Hokies.
The Hokies were tied for ninth entering the second round after shooting a 303 in the morning session. Tech shot a 316 in the afternoon round. The 12-team tournament concludes with 18 holes on Monday morning.
