Tech Tied for Seventh After Opening Round of Matlock Collegiate Classic
Stinnett shoots 77 to lead the Hokies

LAKELAND, Fla. - Virginia Tech shot a 313 to tie Old Dominion for seventh place after the first round of action in the Matlock Collegiate Classic at the Grasslands Golf Club in Lakeland, Fla. on Monday afternoon.
The Hokies, ranked 12th nationally, were among several teams able to complete just the first round of play on a cold and blustery day in Central Florida. Temperatures were in the low 40s with wind gusts of more than 40 mph. Tech will tee off at 7 a.m. Tuesday morning to complete the second round before beginning the final round later in the morning.
Freshman Ryan Stinnett led the Hokies in the first round, shooting a 77 to tie for 17th place. Johnson Wagner is tied for 25th place with a 78. Brian Krusoe and Chris McKeel are tied in 33rd place; each with a 79 and Brendon de Jonge shot an opening round 81 to tie for 54th place.
Stanford leads the 18-team competition with a 298, while host Florida Southern and Alabama are tied for second at 300. Georgia Southern and Ohio State are tied for fourth with 307 and Mississippi is in sixth with 311.
