April 14, 2001
SPARTANBURG, S.C. - In one of the most remarkable comebacks in Virginia Tech golf history, the Hokies rallied from a 10-stroke deficit to win the Wofford Invitational Saturday afternoon. The event was played at the par-72 Carolina Country Club in Spartanburg, S.C.
Tech entered the final round 10 strokes behind first-day leader Coastal Carolina. Tech shot a 280, the tournament's lowest round and tied Furman for the lead after 54 holes with a 866. In the sudden-death playoff, Tech fired two pars and two birdies, bettering the Paladins' four pars. The Hokies played the back-nine 11 shots under par.
Hokie Johnson Wagner finished in second place with a five-under-par 211, two strokes behind Corey Brigham of Maryland. Brendon de Jonge fired a final-round 66, the tournament's lowest round, to finish with a two-under-par 214 and tied for fifth place.
Chris McKeel finished in a tie for 19th place with 220 and Brian Krusoe was tied for 23rd, with a 222. Ryan Stinnett finished with 226, good for a tie for 32nd place. All five Hokies finished the final round par-or-better.
Two Hokies played the tournament as individuals. Scott Wise shot 228 and tied for 40th place and Tommy Graham shot 230, good for a tie for 44th place.
Furman finished second in the 11-team tournament with 866 and Maryland was third with 874. Virginia Commonwealth was fourth with 875 and Coastal Carolina finished fifth, with 876.
The win is Tech's school-record fifth of the season. This is the Hokies' first-ever sudden-death playoff victory. Tech's next action is April 28-29, in the BIG EAST Golf Championship at the Metacomet Country Club in Providence, R.I.
