Hokies Finish Third at Kiawah Island
Stinnett ties for fifth individually

KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a three-round total of 896 to finish in third place on Tuesday at the Cleveland Golf/Kiawah Island Intercollegiate at the 7,061 yard, par-72 Turtle Point Golf Club in Kiawah Island, S.C. Tournament host College of Charleston, the event's defending champion, claimed the title with a three-round total of 879.
Junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) tied for fifth individually at 220, six strokes back of Bruce McDonald of College of Charleston. Stinnett fired a final-round 71 on Tuesday.
Senior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) tied for 16th overall at 222 and senior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) finished 30th at 227. Redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Roanoke, Va.) finished tied for 42nd at 232 and freshman Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) finished tied for 55th at 235.
The Hokies finished 17 strokes behind College of Charleston and nine strokes behind second place Mississippi. Alabama finished fourth at 897 and Baylor finished fifth at 899. Kentucky, Vanderbilt, USC-Aiken, Florida State and Kent State rounded out the top 10.
The Hokies complete the busy first week of the season, as they travel to the Bank of Tennessee/The Ridges Intercollegiate at The Ridges Golf Club in Johnson City, Tenn. on Saturday and Sunday.
