COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Virginia Tech remains in sixth place after shooting a six-over-par 290 in the second round of the 2001 Ping/Golfweek Preview at the 7,141-yard, par-71 Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio. The Hokies are at 582 entering the final round, 11 strokes behind leader Clemson.

Junior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) leads the Hokies with a three-under-par 139 after shooting a second round 69. He is tied with Brent Wanner of Wake Forest for second overall, two strokes off the individual lead of 137 by Ari Savolainen of Florida.

Junior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) and sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) are tied for 28th place with a five-over-par 147. Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) is tied for 51st place overall at 151 and senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) is tied for 58th at 152.

Clemson leads the event with a three-over-par 571. Florida is second at 573 and Georgia is third at 575. Oklahoma State is fourth at 580 and Wake Forest is fifth at 581, one stroke better than the Hokies.

The final round will be played Sunday morning, teeing off at 7:30 a.m. EDT. Twelve of the 15 teams participating in the 2001 Ping/Golfweek Preview finished among the Top 15 teams in the country last year at the NCAA Championships, hosted by Duke University. The Scarlet Course will host the 2002 NCAA Golf Championship in the spring.
