Hokies Finish Fifth at Ping/Golfweek Preview

COLUMBUS, Ohio -- Virginia Tech fired a final-round 289 and finished fifth with a 19-over-par score of 871 at the 2001 Ping/Golfweek Preview at the 7,141-yard, par-71 Ohio State University Scarlet Golf Course in Columbus, Ohio.
Junior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) led the Hokies with a one-under-par 212 after shooting a final-round 73. He finished the event in fifth place, two strokes behind medalist Brent Wanner of Wake Forest.
Sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) tied for 13th place with a four-over-par 217, after shooting a team, final round-best 70. Junior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) and senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) tied for 33rd place overall at 222 and senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) tied for 68th at 231.
Clemson led all three rounds and won the event with a 10-over-par 862. Wake Forest was second at 863 and Texas finished third with an 864. Host Ohio State finished fourth overall at 867, four strokes better than the Hokies. Defending national champion Florida and Georgia tied for sixth at 872 and Oklahoma State finished eighth at 874. Oklahoma was ninth at 882 and Georgia Tech rounded out the top 10 at 890.
Twelve of the 15 teams that participated in the 2001 Ping/Golfweek Preview finished among the Top 15 teams in the country last year at the NCAA Championships, hosted by Duke University. The Scarlet Course will host the 2002 NCAA Golf Championship in the spring.
The Hokies return to action Oct. 14-15 at the Duke Golf Classic sponsored by Coca Cola & Kroger at the Duke University Golf Club in Durham, N.C.
