FUKUSHIMA Prefecture, Japan -- Virginia Tech moved up into seventh place after shooting a 291 in the second round of the 2001 Topy Cup U.S.-Japan Intercollegiate Golf Championship. The Hokies have a two-day total of 594 at the 7,050 yard, par 72 Tanagura Country Club in Fukushima Prefecture, Japan.

Junior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) shot a 70 to lead the Hokies on day two. Sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) shot a 72 and senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Oh.) shot 74. Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) shot 75 for Tech.

After two rounds, McKeel is currently tied for 11th place at 145 and Wagner is tied for 17th at 147. Krusoe is tied for 32nd at 150 and Stinnett is tied for 37th at 152.

Defending champion Tohoku Fukushi leads the event at 559. UAB moves into second at 574 and SMU is third with a 574. Nippon Sports Science University is fourth at 581 and Nihon University is fifth with a 584. Tech's 12-shot improvement from first to second round is the largest of the tournament.

The final round will be played 8 a.m. Thursday, Japan time.
