DURHAM, N.C. -- Virginia Tech led from start to finish to capture the championship of the Duke Golf Classic at the 7,045-yard, par-72 Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Monday afternoon.

The field finished the weather-interrupted second round on Monday morning and played the third and final round Monday afternoon. The Hokies took a six-stroke lead into the second round and increased that to a nine-stroke lead entering the final round before claiming the title. The Hokies shot a 22-over-par 886 for the tournament, six strokes better than runner-up Augusta State at 892.

Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) tied Justin Kolumber of Georgia Southern after regulation. He lost a two-hole playoff for medalist honors and finished second overall. He shot a one-over-par 217 for the tournament.

Junior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) finished tied for fifth with a four-over-par 220. He shot a team-best one-under-par 71 in the final round. Sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) fired an eight-over-par 224 and tied for 18th place. Senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) finished tied for 32nd place at 228 and junior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) tied for 54th place with a 233.

Trailing the Hokies and second place Augusta State were Virginia in third place at 894 and Minnesota in fourth at 903. Tulsa finished fifth at 904, followed by SMU, North Carolina, Georgia Southern, host Duke and Toledo.

The Hokies finished second in the event last season. Virginia Tech also finished eighth at the 2001 NCAA Golf Championship, held on the same course last spring. Eight teams in this season's event played in last year's NCAA Championship. The Hokies return to action on Oct. 29 and 30 as they attempt to defend their title at the ODU/SeaScape Collegiate Invitational at SeaScape Golf Course in Nags Head, N.C.
