DURHAM, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a two-round total of 613 and is in 11th place at the Duke Golf Classic at the 7,000 yard, par-72 Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) leads the Hokies through the first two rounds with a five-over-par 149, good for a tie for 19th place overall. Michigan State's Matt Harmon holds the tournament lead after two rounds at six-under-par 138.
Redshirt senior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) and freshman Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) are tied for 40th place at 154. Freshman Chad Fultz (Staunton, Va,) is tied for 55th at 156 and freshman Will Oldham (Richmond, Va.) is tied for 62nd at 158. Sophomore Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) is playing the tournament as an individual and is tied for 22nd place at 150.
Tournament host Duke leads the event at 579, nine stroke ahead of second place Michigan State. Washington and Baylor are tied for third at 591, one stroke ahead of North Carolina and six strokes ahead of UNC Wilmington. Furman is seventh at 599, Coastal Carolina is eighth at 603 and UNC Charlotte and Texas A&M are tied for ninth at 608, five stroke ahead of the Hokies.
The Hokies were seventh entering the second round after shooting a 304 in the morning session. Tech shot a 310 in the afternoon round. The 14-team tournament concludes with 18 holes on Monday morning.
