DURHAM, N.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a final round 297 and finished in 12^th place with at three-round total of 910 at the Duke Golf Classic at the 7,005 yard, par-72 Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Monday afternoon.

Sophomore Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) led the Hokies throughout the tournament and shot a final round three-under-par 69 to finish in a tie for seventh place overall at two-over-par 218. North Carolina's Martin Ureta shot a final round 66 and defeated Matt Harmon of Michigan State and Duke's Ryan Blaum and Michael Quagliano in a playoff for medalist honors.

Freshman Chad Fultz (Staunton, Va,) tied for 49^th at 231 and freshman Nick MacDonald (Harare, Zimbabwe) finished tied for 55^th at 232. Redshirt senior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) and freshman Will Oldham (Richmond, Va.) tied for 61^st place at 233. Sophomore Carl Wakely (Cardiff, Wales) played the tournament as an individual and finished tied for 34^th place at 227, third-best total among the tournament's eight individual competitors.

Tournament host Duke won the event with a four-under-par 860, 13 strokes better than runner-up North Carolina. Washington and Michigan State tied for third at 876 and Furman was fifth at 883. UNC Wilmington and Baylor tied for sixth at 894, Coastal Carolina was eighth at 897 and Texas A&M was ninth at 904. UNC Charlotte and Drake tied for 10^th at 909, one stroke ahead of the Hokies.

The Hokies were seventh entering the second round after shooting a 304 in the first round and was 11^th entering Monday's final round of the 14 team event.

Tech complete the fall portion of the 2004-05 schedule on Oct. 29-31 at the Landfall Collegiate Tradition at the Country Club of Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
