DURHAM, N.C.. -- Virginia Tech recorded a two-round total of 609 and is in 13th place at the Duke Golf Classic sponsored by Coca-Cola and Taylor Made/adidas at the 7,104 yard, par-72 the Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Sunday afternoon.
Sophomore Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) shot a three-under-par 141 and is in fourth place after the first two rounds. Dustin Bray of North Carolina shot a two-round total of 136 and leads the 81 individuals in the field. Kraner shot a first-round 70 and followed with a second round of 71, the Hokies' two best rounds of the day. Kraner was tied for second after the first round on Sunday.
Redshirt senior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) is tied for 58th place with a two-round total of 156 and senior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 64th place after the first day, at 157. Freshman Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) is tied for 68th at 158 and sophomore Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) is tied for 74th at 161.
Redshirt junior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) is competing as an individual in the tournament and shot a two round total of 153 and is tied for 48th place overall.
North Carolina leads the 15-team event with a two-round total of even-par 576, six strokes ahead of host Duke. Illinois is third at 583 and Kansas State is fourth at 584. Michigan State is fifth at 585 and Toledo, Tulsa, Texas Tech, Florida Southern and UNC Wilmington round out the top 10. The Hokies finished one stroke behind Furman and Coastal Carolina, which are tied for 11th at 608.
Tech shot a 312 and was in 14th place after the first round, but rebounded with a second round 297. The final round of the tournament will be played Monday morning. The Hokies conclude their 2003 fall schedule on Oct. 31-Nov. 1-2 at the Landfall Tradition Collegiate at the Country Club at Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
