Hokies Finish 10th at Duke

DURHAM, N.C.. -- Virginia Tech shot a final round 296 and recorded a two-day total of 905 and finished 10th at the Duke Golf Classic sponsored by Coca-Cola and Taylor Made/adidas at the 7,104 yard, par-72 Duke Golf Club in Durham, N.C. on Monday afternoon.
Sophomore Joel Kraner (Dublin, Ohio) finished with a three-round total of three-over-par 219, good for an 11th place tie. Dustin Bray of North Carolina shot a three-round total of 207 and won medalist honors. Kraner shot a final-round 78 on Monday.
Redshirt senior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) shot the second-best round of Monday, a two-under-par 70, and finished tied for 35th place at 226. Senior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) tied for 50th place at 229, after shooting a final-round 72. Sophomore Sam Nicholson (Augusta, Ga.) tied for 70th at 237 and freshman Ryan Sypniewski (Radford, Va.) finished 77th at 241.
Redshirt junior Scott Wise (Vinton, Va.) competed as an individual in the tournament and shot a three-round total of 235 and tied for 64th place overall.
North Carolina won the 15-team event with a three-round total of four-over-par 868, defeating runner-up Illinois by one stroke and host Duke by three strokes. Tulsa was fourth at 880 and Kansas State was fifth at 882. Toledo, Michigan State and UNC Wilmington finished next and Texas Tech was ninth at 896, two strokes ahead of the Hokies.
Tech shot a 312 and was in 14th place after the first round, but rebounded with a second round 297, to finish the first two rounds in 13th place at 609. The Hokies' 296 on Monday was the sixth-best round of the day.
The Hokies conclude their 2003 fall schedule on Oct. 31-Nov. 1-2 at the Landfall Tradition Collegiate at the Country Club at Landfall in Wilmington, N.C.
