Virginia Tech's Chris McKeel Finishes in Second Place

The Hokies Finish in Seventh Place at the ODU/SeaScape Collegiate Invitational

KITTY HAWK, N.C. -- Freshman Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) of the Virginia Tech golf team finished at 2-under-par and in second place of the ODU/SeaScape Collegiate Invitational. The team moved up two spots to finish in seventh place.

McKeel fired rounds of 73 and 69 to finish at 142. His second round score of 69 was tied for the low round of the day. His round of 69 is also the low round for any Virginia Tech golfer this season. McKeel‚s second place finish is the highest of any Ho kie this season. He started the day in a tie for 11th place and steadily moved nine places up the leaderboard.

The Hokies shot 294 has a team on the final day for a two-day total of 598. Their seventh place finish his their fourth top ten finish in five tournaments this year. Elon fired rounds of 284-294--578 to win the event. The host team Old Dominion started the day only six strokes back of Elon but shot a 299 final round. They finished in second place along with UNC Wilmington at 589, 11 strokes off the lead.

Todd Grassi of Elon shot 70-69--139 to finish at 5-under-par and three strokes ahead of second place finisher McKeel. He broke out of the pack of first round leaders that were tied at 70. This included teammate Terry Slater and ODU‚s Stephen Richards wh o shot 74 and 76 respectively.

This is the Hokies last tournament of the fall season. They open their spring season March 6th and 7th at the Matlock Collegiate Classic in Lakeland, Florida.
