Hokie Golfers Bring Home Adams Cup Tournament Championship
Krusoe, McKeel Finish in Top 10 Against Fierce Competition
October 4, 2000
NARRAGANSETT, R.I. - Four Virginia Tech golfers finished in the top 20 as the Hokies overcame a one stroke deficit to win the Seventh Annual Adams Cup of Newport Collegiate Golf Tournament. The Adams Cup is widely considered one of the top tournaments in the East, featuring 13 top programs from across the country.
The Hokies entered Wednesday's final round trailing only Southeastern Louisiana, which fell to sixth overall. This is the team's first tournament championship since it won the Pepsi/Bradford Creek Intercollegiate in the spring.
The final round teed off at 8 a.m., Wednesday morning at the Pointe Judith Country Club in Narragansett, R.I.
Tech was led by team captain Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) and Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) who both shot an impressive 1-under-par 71 to tie three others for the lowest round of the day. Krusoe shot a 214 for the tournament leaving him in a tie for third place with D.J. Fiese of Georgia State. McKeel ended up in eighth shooting a 218. Brendon De Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) and Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) shot 76 and 73, respectively, to end up in a tie for 14th place overall. Freshman Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) totaled a 231 over the three-round tournament to leave him in a tie for 45th.
UNC Charlotte's Jeff Curl, who entered the day in a three-way tie for first, took home the individual title.
This marks a huge win for the Hokies who next play in the Duke Golf Classic held at the Duke University Golf Club, Oct. 15-16.
