Newport, R.I. -- Virginia Tech fired an opening round 293 on Tuesday and leads the Adams Cup of Newport golf tournament at the 6,735 yard, par-70 Newport National Golf Club Orchard Course in Newport, R.I.
Senior Chris McKeel (Wilson, N.C.) registered an opening round 71 and is tied for third place. Redshirt junior Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) is tied for seventh at 72 and junior Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) is tied for 16th at 74. Senior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) shot a 76 and is tied for 37th and redshirt sophomore Scott Wise (Roanoke, Va.) is tied for 83rd at 84.
The Hokies enter the second round one stroke ahead of Georgia, which shot a 294. Michigan State and Kentucky are tied for fourth, three strokes back at 296 and Louisville is fifth at 297. Georgia State, host Rhode Island, East Tennessee State, Texas A&M and Virginia round out the top 10.
The second round of the tournament began Tuesday afternoon, but was suspended due to darkness. The remainder of the second round will be completed Wednesday at the Orchard Course and the third round will be played Wednesday at Newport Country Club.
