HILTON HEAD, S.C. -- Virginia Tech shot a second-round 14-over-par 298 on Saturday afternoon and is in ninth place at the Long Cove Collegiate Invitational. The event is being played at the 7,026-yard, par-71 Long Cove Golf Club in Hilton Head, S.C. The Hokies have posted a two-day total of 595 in the 15-team field that features many of the top teams in the country.
Sophomore Ryan Stinnett (Amherst, Va.) fired a two-over-par 73 in the second round and is tied with Nick Bollini of Southern California for 17th place with a two-day total of 145. He is eight strokes behind tournament leader David Oh of USC.
Junior Brendon de Jonge (Harare, Zimbabwe) is in a four-way tie for 19th place at 146, after leading the Hokies with a second-round, one-under-par 70. Senior Johnson Wagner (Garrison, N.Y.) is tied for 30th place at 149. Senior Brian Krusoe (Northfield, Ohio) is tied for 58th place at 155 and sophomore Matt Hollerbach (Tulsa, Okla.) is tied for 72nd place at 162.
Georgia Tech shot a 278 on Saturday to take the lead with a two-day total of 575. First-round leader Texas is five strokes back at 580 and Clemson is third at 581. Southern California and Wake Forest are tied for fourth at 586 and Georgia is sixth at 587. Oklahoma State is seventh at 588 and Arizona State is eighth at 590, five strokes ahead of the Hokies. Augusta State rounds out the top ten at 597.
The final round will be played Sunday.
