LANCASHIRE, England - Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver shot a two-round total of four-under-par 140 and advanced to match play at the 2007 British Amateur Championship, being played at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in Lancashire, England.

Weaver, a rising junior from High Point, N.C., is one of two Americans to advance out of stroke play. Weaver won his first round match against Luis Garcia of Spain, 4 & 3. He will play in the round of 32 on Thursday morning against Simon Ward of Great Britain.

The British Amateur Championship features 288 players competing for 64 spots in match play. Tom Glissmeyer of Colorado Springs, Colo. and the University of Southern California, is the only other American to advance to match play.

Weaver competed in the U.S. Amateur last summer and helped lead the Hokies to the 2007 ACC Men's Golf co-championship and a berth in the 2007 NCAA Men's Golf East Regional.
