CARNOUSTIE, Scotland -- Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver improved to a second round one-over-par 72 in the 2007 British Open Championship on Friday. The 136^th Open Championship is being played at the 7,421-yard, par 71 Carnoustie Golf Links in Carnoustie, Scotland.

Weaver, a rising junior from High Point, N.C., compiled a 36-hole total of six-over-par 148. He missed the cut, at plus-five, by two strokes. The top 70 players and ties advance to the third round of the Open Championship.

Weaver was two-under-par after five holes on Friday, with birdies at the first and third holes. He made the turn at one-under par before bogeys at 14 and 15 knocked him over the cut line. Weaver parred the final three holes, generally considered the toughest stretch on the course. First round leader Sergio Garcia of Spain holds the 36-hole lead at six-under-par 136.

Weaver was one of six amateurs and the only American amateur in the field of 156. Weaver finished second of the six amateurs. Rory McIlroy of Ireland was the only amateur to advance to the third round. Weaver won exemption into the Open Championship with his win in the 2007 British Amateur in June. This is the ninth time the Open Championship has been played at Carnoustie, the most recent time being 1999.

Weaver was in a group that included Briton Paul Casey and Canadian Stephen Ames. Casey shot three-over-par 145 and Ames shot nine-over-par 151 for the first two rounds.
