AUGUSTA, Ga. -- Virginia Tech golfer Drew Weaver shot a eight-over-par 80 in the second round of the 72nd Annual Masters Tournament at the par 72, 7,445-yard Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Ga., on Friday afternoon and missed the cut at golf's most prestigious event.
Weaver, a junior from High Point, N.C., finished the tournament at 156. He was one of three amateurs in the tournament, none of which made the cut. Weaver finished in 89th place.
Former Hokie Johnson Wagner opened play in the second round with a triple bogey on the first hole and was at plus-five on the day entering the seventh hole. Wagner, who shot even-par 72 on Thursday, birdied the par-five eighth on Friday and made the turn at four-over-par. Wagner birdied the 13th and 14th holes and pared out to finish the round with a 74 and a two-over-par 146 for the 36 holes. He enters Saturday tied for 29th.
Trevor Immelman leads the tournament at eight-under-par 136, one stroke ahead of Brandt Snedeker. The cut was at three-over-par 147.
Weaver, one of just two collegiate players in the Masters, will return to the course next weekend, as he and his Hokie teammates will look to defend their ACC title at the 55th Annual ACC Men's Golf Championship at the Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C., on April 18-20.
