Golfers earn NCAA bid
Hokies 11th seed in East Regional in Chattanooga
May 5, 2008

NCAA Men's Golf Championship Regional Fields

INDIANAPOLIS, ind. - The Virginia Tech golf team has received an at-large bid to the 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championship. The Hokies will compete May 15-17 as the 11th seed in the East Regional at Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., hosted by the University of Tennessee at Chattanooga.

This will be the Hokies' second consecutive NCAA appearance and their 10th all-time appearance in the NCAA Championship. Tech was the 16th seed in the East Regional last season and finished 12th in the event at the Golf Club of Georgia. Three golfers, seniors Jurrian van der Vaart and Nick MacDonald, and junior Drew Weaver return from last year's NCAA competitors.

"We are very proud to represent Virginia Tech in the NCAA Regionals and are excited to be playing in Chattanooga where our fans can come and support our team," head coach Jay Hardwick said. "The players built on the success of last season's ACC Championship and had an outstanding season. We look forward to continuing our season in the national championship."

Virginia Tech won two tournaments during the season and finished in the top 10 of all 10 of its events this season. The Hokies enter the regionals ranked 33rd nationally by Golfstat.com and 34th nationally by the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index. Van der Vaart, a 2008 All-ACC selection, is ranked 56th individually in the Golfweek/Sagarin Performance Index.

The Hokies are one of nine Atlantic Coast Conference teams selected for the regionals. Tech finished eighth in the 2008 ACC Men's Golf Championship in April. The Hokies are the seventh-highest seeded ACC team in the regionals. Joining the Hokies in Chattanooga are fourth-seeded Duke, 12th-seeded NC State and 22nd-seeded Virginia. The ACC's nine teams in the regionals is second only to the SEC's 11 competiting teams.

Georgia is the number-one seed in Chattanooga and the number-one seed overall. Southern California is the top seed in the West Regional in Bremerton, Wash., and is the second seed overall and Alabama is seeded first in the Central Regional in Columbus, Ohio and is the third overall seed.
