CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. - Virginia Tech shot a second round 291 and are in 15th place entering the final round of the NCAA East Regional at the 6,961-yard, par 71 Council Fire Golf Club in Chattanooga, Tenn., on Friday afternoon.

The Hokies have a two-round total of 572. Tech is seven strokes out of 10th place, needed to advance to the NCAA Championships in two weeks.

All-ACC performer Jurrian van der Vaart (Sr., Almelo, the Netherlands) continued his strong play on Friday, shooting a three-under-par 68. He has a two-day total of 135 and is tied with three other players for fourth place. Zach Sucher of UAB, who was paired with van der Vaart in the first two rounds, shot a nine-under-par 62, highlighted by a 28 on the back nine in Friday's second round. He leads the tournament by two strokes over Hudson Swafford of Georgia.

Drew Weaver (Jr., High Point, N.C.) shot one-under-par 70 and is tied for 49th at 143 and Nick MacDonald (Sr., Harare, Zimbabwe) is tied for 63rd place at 144. Marshall Bailey (Fr., Fincastle, Va.) is tied for 123rd at 150 and Aaron Eckstein (Fr., Salem, Va.) is tied for 132nd at 154.

Top-seed Georgia continued its strong play and leads the tournament with a two-day total of 32-under-par 536, 19 strokes ahead of Augusta State. Auburn and Cal-Irvine are tied for third at 558 and Mississippi State is fifth at 560. UAB and New Mexico State are tied for sixth at 561, host Chattanooga and Charlotte are tied for eighth at 563 and Michigan State and Middle Tennessee State are tied for 10th at 564. Duke is 12th at 568, East Tennessee State is 13th at 569 and SMU is 14th at 571, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Georgia State and Virginia are tied for 16th at 573, Western Carolina is 18th at 574 and Colorado State and NC State are tied for 19th at 575.

Twenty-seven teams are competing in the event, plus six individuals. The top ten teams and top two individuals not from advancing teams from each of the three regionals advance to the 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at Purdue at the end of the month.

The Hokies will tee off Saturday morning on the first tee in the final round, beginning at 8:35 a.m., grouped with ETSU and SMU. Live scoring is available on golfstat.com.
