NORFOLK, Va. - Virginia Tech golfer Jurrian van der Vaart has been named the Virginia State Player of the Year by means of being the only unanimous selection to the 2008 Virginia State Golf Coaches Association All-State team. Van der Vaart joins Hokie Drew Weaver on the first team and teammate Nick MacDonald was selected to the second team.

Van der Vaart, a senior from Alemlo, the Netherlands, completed his Virginia Tech career with a ninth place finish at the 2008 NCAA Men's Golf Championship at West Lafayette, Ind., in May. He led the Hokies in scoring average and final round scoring average this season and was a third-team All-America selection by the Golf Coaches Association of America and an honorable mention All-America by Golfweek. He is a member of the All-South Region team and was named All-ACC.

Weaver, the 2007 British Amateur Champion, is a rising senior from High Point, N.C. He was second on the team in scoring average and final round scoring average this season. He played in the 2007 British Amateur and the 2008 Masters, as well as the 2008 Memorial Tournament and the AT&T National, both on the PGA Tour.

MacDonald is a senior from Harare, Zimbabwe and was third on the team in scoring average and final round scoring average in the 2007-08 season. He was Tech's top finisher when the Hokies won the Landfall Collegiate Invitational in the fall.

Weaver was a first-team selection last season and a second-team selection as a freshman in 2006. Van der Vaart was a first-team selection last season and this is MacDonald's first selection.
