Weaver, van der Vaart earn academic honor
Hokie golfers named to GCAA Scholar team
July 14, 2008

NORMAN, Okla. - Virginia Tech golfers Drew Weaver and Jurrian van der Vaart have been named Cleveland Golf All-America Scholars for Division I. The academic team is selected by a committee of the Golf Coaches Association of America.

Weaver and van der Vaart become only the fourth and fifth Hokie golfers to earn this distinction. Carl Wakely in 2006, Mark Teachey in 1986 and Jake Allison in 1985, were the other Tech players to garner the award.

"This is a tremendous honor for both Jurrian and Drew," head coach Jay Hardwick said. "These two players are outstanding leaders, both on the course and in the classroom. The balance they show in their academic pursuits and their athletic careers embodies the true meaning of the term, 'Student-Athlete'."

Van der Vaart from Almelo, the Netherlands, finished his collegiate career in May with a ninth-place finish at the NCAA Championship. He was selected as the Virginia Tech ACC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Year. He led the Hokies in scoring average and final round scoring average this season. A two-time All-ACC Academic team honoree, van der Vaart is currently finishing his degree in environmental science. He was named a 2008 ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III at-large second team selection, as announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA).

Weaver, a rising senior from High Point, N.C., majoring in marketing, was second on the team in scoring average and final round scoring average. The 2007 British Amateur Champion, Weaver has competed in the 2007 British Open, the 2008 Masters Tournament, the 2008 Memorial Tournament and the 2008 AT&T National Tournament on the PGA Tour. He was also named a 2008 CoSIDA ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District III at-large second team selection.

The pair are two of only six Atlantic Coast Conference golfers and two of four golfers from the Commonwealth of Virginia to make the list. Only juniors and seniors are eligible to be a Cleveland Golf All-America Scholar and must have at least a 3.2 cumulative grade-point average. In addition, golfers must have under a 76.0 stroke average. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
