MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. -- The Virginia Tech golf team shot a three-round total of 850 and finished in sixth place at the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. on Tuesday afternoon. The event was played on the par 71, 6,955-yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.

The Hokies were led by senior Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.), who shot a two-under-par 211 and tied for 10th place. Day one co-leaders Dustin Garza of Wichita State and Brendan Geilow of Wake Forest tied for medalist honors, at 12-under-par 201, 10 strokes ahead of Weaver.

Sophomore Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) shot 213 and tied for 19th place and sophomore Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) tied for 22nd place at 214. Sophomore Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) shot 217 and tied for 37th place and redshirt junior Matt Boyd (Sugar Land. Tex.) shot 219 and tied for 44th.

Redshirt senior Will Oldham (Spartanburg, S.C.) played the tournament as an individual and tied with Weaver at 211 and in 10th place. Freshman Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) also played the tournament as an individual and shot 220 and tied for 51st in his first collegiate rounds.

The Hokies entered the final round tied with Virginia for second place, but shot a final round 291 for the sixth place finish. Bailey, Eckstein and Oldham each shot 72 to tie for the best round of Tuesday for a Hokie golfer.

Wake Forest led all three rounds and won the event with a total of 27-under-par 825 and defeated runner-ups Augusta State and host VCU by 16 strokes. Virginia was fourth at 846 and Wichita State was fifth at 849, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Iowa was seventh at 853, Maryland was eighth at 861, Penn State was ninth at 863 and Southeastern Louisiana was 10th at 866. East Carolina was 11th at 867, UNC Wilmington was 12th at 868, South Florida and Richmond tied for 13th at 873 and Old Dominion was 15th at 874.

The Hokies will return to action on Oct. 11-13, as they travel to Macon, Ga., to compete in the Brickyard Collegiate Golf Championship.
