GREENVILLE, S.C. -- Persistent rains and standing water forced the suspension of the opening round of the 40th Annual Furman Intercollegiate shortly after 6:00 p.m. on Friday with 11 teams, including Virginia Tech and host Furman, yet to complete 18 holes at the par-72 Furman University Golf Course.

The University of North Florida, teeing off in the morning wave, is the leader in the clubhouse with an opening round 296 while East Carolina grabbed second with a first round 298. UNF’s Chris Kennedy posted the top individual score from the morning wave with a one-under 71.

The tournament began at 8 a.m. on Friday, but was delayed by standing water in the fairways and on several greens at 12:45 p.m. Play resumed at 3:25 p.m. before being suspended at 6 p.m.

First round play is scheduled to resume on Saturday morning at approximately 9:30 a.m. The second round, originally slated for Saturday, will be played following the completion of round one if weather permits. Forecasts on Friday evening are calling for heavy rains and severe thunderstorms with the chance of hail in the Greenville, S.C., area on Saturday afternoon. Final round action is set for Sunday morning.
