NEW LONDON, N.C. – Virginia Tech shot an opening round one-over-par 289 and is tied with Maryland for fifth place at the 56^th Annual ACC Men’s Golf Championship at the 7,102-yard, par-72 Old North State Club at Uwharrie Point in New London, N.C. on Friday.

Hokie senior Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) shot a first round five-under-par 67 and is tied with Cameron Tringale of Georgia Tech for the individual lead. Weaver and Tringale lead Matt Hill of NC State by one stroke. Weaver made six birdies and one bogey on Friday.

Redshirt junior Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Texas) and sophomore Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) each shot 73 and are tied for 24^th place. Sophomore Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) and freshman Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Texas) each shot 76 and are tied for 42^nd place.

Georgia Tech shot seven-under-par 281 and leads NC State by one stroke. Clemson is third at 286 and defending champion Florida State is fourth at 287, two strokes ahead of the Hokies and Terrapins. North Carolina and Duke are tied for seventh one stroke back at 290, Virginia is eighth at 291 and Wake Forest is 10^th at 295. Boston College is 11^th at 311.

Six of the 11 ACC teams enter the tournament ranked in the top 50 nationally in the Golfstat.com poll, including #3 Clemson and #9 Georgia Tech. Weaver, 35^th nationally, is one of seven ACC golfers in the top 50, including Clemson’s Kyle Stanley, ranked fourth, Hill, ranked seventh and Tringale, ranked eighth. The Hokies are 53^rd in the Golfstat.com rankings and 61^st in the Golfweek/Sagarin poll. Weaver is ranked 51^st in Golfweek/Sagarin rankings, where Tringale is third and Hill is fourth.
