Final Results

AUSTIN, Tex. – Virginia Tech shot a final-round 302 and finished in 12th place in the NCAA Austin Regional at the par 71, 7,412-yard University of Texas Golf Club in Austin, Tex. on Saturday. The Hokies, the tournament’s 10th seed, posted a three-round total of 910.

“We got started really well today,” head coach Jay Hardwick said. “We had two players even par and three players under par when the delay came. And that’s what we needed to do, go out and make a statement. Everybody was playing pretty solid then we got in the rain delay.

“We came back out and Garland (Green) really picked it back up, but it was tough. The wind totally changed and you can see that with all the scores. All the scores started going sky-high.”

Senior Drew Weaver (High Point, N.C.) led the Hokies in his final collegiate tournament with a three-round total of eight-over-pat 221 and tied for 12th place. He finished 12 strokes behind Lance Lopez of Texas who claimed medalist honors.

Sophomore Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) tied for 45th at 228 and sophomore Marshall Bailey (Fincastle, Va.) tied for 48th at 240. Redshirt senior Will Oldham (Spartanburg, S.C.) tied for 60th place at 244 and redshirt junior Matt Boyd (Sugar Land, Tex.) is tied for 65th at 237. This was also Oldham’s final career appearance for the Hokies. He and Weaver graduated this weekend, but missed commencement exercises due to the tournament.

“The wind change really could have been an advantage for us, because all the scores were going to go up from that point,” Hardwick said. “But we just didn’t take advantage of that and we put up some big numbers on that front nine.”

The top five teams from each of the six regionals advance to the NCAA Championship. Florida won the Austin Regional at 874, two strokes ahead of Texas Tech and three strokes ahead of the host Texas Longhorns. Stanford at 887 and Michigan at 888 also advance to the finals..

“Drew Weaver had another fine tournament. What a great career he’s had. I just wished we could have gotten him off to a better start, because he played the front nine today two-under-par and he played that side of the golf course under par for the tournament and I’m not sure anybody played it any better than that.”

“Garland played really well again today. He got it started good and just had a couple of bad holes. Marshall had a good round today. It was just one of those days where we needed to pick up a lot of shots and had a chance. We just have to put ourselves in that position a little bit more, work hard this summer and get ready for next season.”
