BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Virginia Tech golfer Marshall Bailey has qualified for the 2009 U.S. Amateur Golf Championship following his second place finish in regional qualifying at the Westwood Country Club in Vienna, Va., on Monday and Tuesday.

Bailey, a rising junior from Fincastle, Va., shot a two-round total of 138, tying Kevin McLister of Leesburg, Va., one stroke behind John-Tyler Griffin of Wilson, N.C. The trio will join Jay Fisher of Charlottesville, Va., and Denny McCarthy of Burtonsville, Md., in advancing to the championship, played at the Southern Hills Country Club and the Cedar Ridge Country Club in Tulsa, Okla., August 24-30.

This will mark Bailey’s second appearance in the U.S. Amateur. He qualified for the 2007 U.S. Amateur at the Olympic Club in San Francisco, shooting 161 in the two rounds of match play.

Former Hokie Drew Weaver will also compete in the 2009 U.S. Amateur. He will play on an exemption earned by winning the 2007 British Amateur Championship at Royal Lytham & St. Annes in Lancashire, England.

This will be the second U.S. Amateur played at Southern Hills. Bob Murphy won the event in 1965 at Southern Hills. Southern Hills will also host the 2011 U.S. Open. It has hosted eight previous USGA championships, including three U.S. Opens.
