MANAKIN-SABOT, Va. – Virginia Tech shot a two-round total of 585 on Monday and is in sixth place after the first day of the VCU Shootout at the Hermitage Country Club in Manakin-Sabot, Va. The event is being played on the par 72, 6,955-yard Manakin Course at Hermitage.
The Hokies shot a three-over-par 291 in the morning's first round and a six-over-par 294 in the afternoon round for the nine-over-par 585.
Sophomore Blake Redmond (Sugar Land, Tex.) leads the Hokies entering Tuesday's final round. He shot an even-par 72 in the morning and a three-under-par 69 in the afternoon and is tied for fourth place at 141. He trails tournament leader Brendan Gielow of Wake Forest, who shot 137 on Monday. Gielow was a teammate of former Hokie Drew Weaver on the 2009 U.S. Walker Cup Championship team earlier this month.
Freshman Mikey Moyers (Standardsville, Va.) and junior Marshall Bailey are tied for 25th place at 147. Junior Garland Green (Tazewell, Va.) is tied for 44th at 150 and freshman Jacob Everts (Ooltewah, Tenn.) is tied for 64th at 154. Junior Aaron Eckstein (Salem, Va.) is playing the event as an individual and shot a two-round total of 153 and is tied for 57th place.
UNC Wilmington leads the tournament with a two-round total of five-under-par 571, nine strokes ahead of Wake Forest. Virginia and host VCU are tied for third at 581 and Richmond is in fifth place at 584, one stroke ahead of the Hokies. Iowa and Penn State are tied for seventh at 588, ECU is ninth at 590 and UNC Greensboro is 10th at 592. Wichita State is 11th at 593, Charlotte is 12th at 594, Maryland is 13th at 602 and Mercer is 14th at 607.
The final round of the event will be played on Tuesday. The Hokies will be grouped with Richmond and Virginia, beginning at 8:45 a.m., on holes 4-7.
