Current NFL Hokies watching approvingly

December 17, 1999

By Neal Richards

We were able to track down some former Tech players who are now playing football in the National Football League. Here is what they had to say about Tech playing in the national championship game and their prediction for the game.

Antonio Banks (1993-96) Minnesota Vikings

" I don't know what to say. I'm just so proud of the program. To see those guys play in the national championship is a dread." Michael Vick and Banks attended the same high school (Warwick).

"He can get better He's needs to not read his press clippings and continue to work hard with coach Bustle and the coaching staff.

"A lot of people like [Minnesota All-pro wide receivers] Cris Carter and Randy Moss are talking about how they haven't seen anybody that good so young."

Prediction - Tech 24, Florida State 21.

Ken Oxendine (1994-97) RB - Atlanta Falcons

"Looking back, when I was recruited and especially my last two or three years at Tech, I knew that it was just a matter of time. Because we were so close to going undefeated. We would have one slip-up now and then. They got through without an upset. I'm real proud of them. "It will be a good game. Florida State might sleep a little on the Hokies."

Prediction - Hokies 31, Seminoles 24

Bryan Still (1992-95) WR - Atlanta Falcons

"It's the biggest thrill I've had since I left. I've made sure to watch them on TV. I talk to Jermaine Holmes all the time. I told him to tell AndrÚ Davis that he's not faster than me. I wish he was there when I was there. He's broke all my records.

"Michael Vick is a great player. I heard a lot about him when he was redshirting. People would tell me how good he was but I didn't believe them. He's impressed me a lot."

Prediction - Hokies 24, Seminoles 17

Jim Pyne (1990-93) OL - Cleveland Browns

"I always thought Tech was a first-class program with great people. We always played tough football.

"This team reminds me of all the Tech teams. Great defense. Great special teams. And the power - run it down your throat - offense."

Prediction - Hokies 30, Seminoles 17

Torrian Gray (1993-96) DB - Minnesota Vikings

"It's great, the exposure they're getting. Even the players up here are taking notice. Vick should win the Heisman according to Jimmy Hitchcock. Guys on this teams admire his talent. There has to be really something special about a player for people at this level to talk about him like that.

"It's like it's nothing fancy. Good hard-nosed football. Strong running game. Play-action off that with Vick. Same attacking style as when we were there. And of course the special teams are great."

Prediction - Hokies 24, Seminoles 20

Keion Carpenter (1995-98) DB - Buffalo Bills

"I'm very proud of Virginia Tech. I know most of the guys. It feels like I'm in the game too. I watch the games sitting right in front of the TV. I'm excited for the whole program. To be the best, you have to beat the best." Hokies win

Billy Conaty (1993-96) OL - Buffalo Bills

"It's exciting for all the alumni. We're all proud. We don't get the respect that other teams get. "Tech is really good this year especially at the quarterback position." Prediction - Hokies win

Waverly Jackson (1993-1996) OL - Indianapolis Colts

"I am excited for Virginia Tech, the fans and the whole town. Virginia Tech worked really over the years to get to this situation and that is what it took. It took year-by-year playing against the good competition. It took playing Tennessee in the Gator Bowl, playing Nebraska in the Orange Bowl, playing North Carolina in the Gator Bowl and now to have a chance to go against one of the best teams in the 90s in Florida State. I'm really excited for coach Beamer. He's done a wonderful job over the years.

Prediction - Hokies win.

"I'm not giving a score. We are just going to come and do what we do. Take it one play at a time and one down at a time. In the end, it will be Virginia Tech over Florida State."
