Hokies Selected 5th in BIG EAST Lacrosse Poll
Conference round-robin play begins in 2001
February 1, 2001 Virginia Tech has been selected fifth for the inaugural BIG EAST Conference women's lacrosse championship, as chosen by the league's seven head coaches. Coaches were not permitted to vote for their own team. The Hokies received 17 points in the poll. Georgetown was the first pick, with 36 points and six first place votes, while Syracuse was the second choice, with 31 points and the remaining first place vote. Rutgers was the third pick with 23 points, followed by Notre Dame with 19 points and the Hokies. Connecticut received 14 points for sixth place and Boston College gained seven points and the seventh position. BIG EAST teams will play a six-game round-robin conference schedule with the league champion determined by regular-season play. The BIG EAST champion will receive an automatic bid to the 16-team 2001 NCAA Division I Women's Lacrosse Championship. The national semifinals and final will be held May 18 and 20 at Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore. Tech finished the 2000 season 9-8 overall and 5-1 in the Atlantic 10 Conference. The Hokies open the 2001 season on Sunday, Feb. 25 in the Loyola Tournament in Baltimore.
