Women's Lacrosse Drops Season Opener

George Mason tops Hokies, 12-6.

March 4, 1998

FAIRFAX, Va. -- George Mason sophomore Liz Paoli scored five goals as the Patriots spoiled Virginia Tech's season opener, 12-6, in women's lacrosse action at George Mason Stadium Wednesday afternoon.

The Patriots, also playing in their season opener, jumped out to a quick 4-0 lead behind two goals each from Paoli and Laura Thornburg. However, the Hokies (0-1) were able to close their deficit to 4-2 at intermission on goals from junior Catherine Augustyn and sophomore Courtney Hubbard.

After Paoli's third goal of the afternoon at the 26:22 mark of the second half, Tech drew closer at 5-3 when sophomore attack wing Dawn Will scored the first of her three goals on the day. Hubbard would record another goal for Tech, but the George Mason attack proved too strong as Paoli was joined by five other Patriots to complete the scoring and the win.

Tech goalie Melissa Wagner, despite giving up 12 goals, was impressive between the pipes for the Hokies. The junior goalkeeper finished the afternoon with 14 saves in a complete-game effort.

Sophomore Maeghan O'Doherty and freshman Karen Diacont each recorded assists while sophomore Lisa Pfeiffer led the Tech defense with two blocks.

Tech returns to action March 15, when the Hokies travel to Nashville, Tenn., for a Sunday meeting with Cornell in Vanderbilt's Commodore Stadium. First draw is scheduled for 3 p.m. Tech will face Vandy in Commodore Stadium on Monday, March 16.
