No.8 JMU Too Much for Hokies

HARRISONBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech senior Kate Threadgold scored four goals and added one assists, but it wasn't enough to hold off No.8 James Madison. The Dukes defeated the Hokies, 20-8, Sunday afternoon at the JMU Lacrosse Complex.

Tech (3-2), which was unranked, saw its three-game winning streak end.JMU (5-1) entered the game raanked eighth in the Intercollegiate Women's Lacrosse Coaches Association national poll.

Tech senior Kate Threadgold gave the Hokies a 1-0 lead with an unassisted goal just 1:21 into the contest.

However, the Dukes ran off six straight goals, including two by Gail Decker and two by freshman Kelly Berger, to go up 6-1 with 13:43 remaining in the first half.

Tech freshman Kelsey Mays netted back-to-back scores within a 47-second span to cut the Dukes' lead to 6-3. But JMU outscored the Hokies 4-1 in the final 10:28 to take a 10-4 lead into halftime. Tech got no closer than five goals (10-5) in the second half.

Senior goalkeeper Jamie McGraw recorded 16 saves in the loss.

The Hokies return to action on Friday, March 26, when they travel to South Bend, Ill., to face No.3 Notre Dame. The game at Moose Krause Stadium begins at 4 p.m. On Sunday, March 28, Tech will take on No. 14 Northwestern at Lakeside Field in Evanston, Ill. The game is set to begin at noon.
