Women's Lacrosse Claims Home Opener Over Bucknell, 18-3

Sophomore Dawn Will scores six goals in Hokie win.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Dawn Will scored six goals to lead the Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team to an 18-3 victory over Bucknell in the Hokies' home opener at Rector Fieldhouse Friday.

The win was Tech's first of the season against three losses and the first for interim coach Brooke Martin. The loss dropped Bucknell to 1-1 on the season.

Will scored three goals and added an assist in the first 24 minutes of play as the Hokies darted out to a 7-0 lead in the first half. Junior attack wing Suzy Funston added two goals as well during the run. Bucknell scored their only goal of the half with six minutes remaining on a free position shot from junior Lauren Coyne. Tech added two more goals to lead 9-1 at the intermission.

After a quick Bucknell goal by Heidi Hammes just 37 seconds into the second half, the Hokies exploded to outscore the Bison 8-1 in the final 29 minutes of play. Six different Hokies scored in the stretch, including two goals apiece from senior Amy Mantooth and sophomore Courtney Hubbard.

Bucknell's final goal came from the stick of freshman Page Brewster, who scored on Tech goalie Stacey Rainbolt with 6:33 remaining in the contest.

Tech starter Melissa Wagner registered nine saves in goal for the Hokies before giving way to Rainbolt early in the second half.

Tech returns to action on Sunday, March 22, when the Hokies face Drexel University. First draw is scheduled for 1 p.m.
