Women's Lacrosse Captures Second Straight Win

Dawn Will leads the Hokies with seven goals.

March 22, 1998

BLACKSBURG, Va. --
Sophomore Dawn Will paced the Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team with seven goals as the Hokies captured their second-straight win with a 15-4 victory over Drexel in Rector Fieldhouse Sunday.

Will's seven goals eclipses her previous career-high of six, set in Tech's 18-3 win over Bucknell on Friday. The Phoenix, Md., native now has 17 goals on the season to lead all Tech scorers.

Tech (2-3) jumped out to a quick 2-0 on goals by sophomore Maeghan O'Doherty and Will. Drexel (0-2) countered on an unassisted goal by sophomore Ali Kreiger. The Hokies quickly ran off five unanswered goals, building a 7-1 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first half. DU's Julie Carney rounded out the scoring in the first stanza with one of her team-high two goals at the 9:42 mark, making it a 7-2 Tech advantage at intermission.

Tech's Suzy Funston added a goal to start the second half before Carney tallied another goal to close the Drexel deficit to 8-3 with 20:03 remaining in the contest. However, the Tech sticks came alive as Will added four more goals along with single goals from Courtney Hubbard and Funston to give Tech a 14-3 lead with 6:18 remaining in the contest. Katherine Erhard closed the scoring for Drexel on a single goal with :32 remaining. With only :07 remaining, Hubbard found net for her second goal of the day to give the Hokies the 15-4 win.

Joining Will with multiple goals for Tech, were Hubbard, Funston and O'Doherty each with two. Catherine Augustyn and Eileen Miller also added goals for the Hokies.

Drexel goalie Michelle Geist allowed Tech 15 goals, but collected 22 saves in the loss.

Tech returns to action Wednesday, March 25, when the Hokies travel to Chapel Hill, N.C., to face top-ranked North Carolina. First draw is scheduled for 5 p.m.
