March 28, 1998

FAIRFAX, Va. -- Junior attack wing Suzy Funston was perfect from the field with five goals as the Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team rolled over Stanford, 21-11, at George Mason Stadium Saturday afternoon.

Funston, who had scored only eight goals in Tech's first six contests, fell one shy of her personal high with the five goals. She proved one of six Hokies with multiple goals in the affair.

The Hokies roared out to a 6-0 lead through the first 13 minutes of play behind three goals from Funston and two from sophomore Dawn Will, who finished with four on the afternoon. The Cardinal cut the Tech lead to 6-2 on back-to-back goals from sophomore Hedy Born. The two teams traded goals in the last 13 minutes of the half as the Hokies carried a 10-6 lead into intermission.

The Hokies proceeded on an 8-2 run in the early going of the second half to lead 18-8 with 13:45 remaining in the contest. Born added three more goals in the half to finish with a match-high six goals. Tech however got strong bench play down the stretch, including two goals each from Amy Mantooth and Courtney Hubbard, to close the scoring at 21-11.

Tech's Maeghan O'Doherty also proved impressive with three goals and three assists in the contest. The Hokies' goalie Melissa Wagner finished with 10 saves while Stanford keeper Stephanie Tuerk added 15 stops in the loss.

With the win, the Hokies climb to 3-4 on the season.
