Hokies Grab First A-10 Victory

Women's lacrosse defeats St. Joseph's 16-9.

BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech earned its first Atlantic 10 victory Sunday with a 16-11 decision over St. Joseph's in women's collegiate lacrosse action at Rector Fieldhouse.

The victory snapped a two-game losing streak for the Hokies, who improve to 6-2 on the season. Tech also evens its conference mark at 1-1. The Hawks fall to 1-7 overall and 0-2 in A-10 action.

The Hokies, behind two goals each from Suzy Funston (Moorestown, N.J.), Karen Diacont (Gambrills, Md.) and Dawn Will (Phoenix, Md.) in the first 20 minutes of play, raced to a 10-3 lead at the half.

The Hawks cut the lead to four in the second half before Will, Diacont, and Meaghan O'Doherty (Annapolis, Md.) added insurance goals to seal the victory.

Will led the Hokies with four goals while Funston and Diacont added three goals each. Junior Courtney Hubbard (Fairfax, Va.) also was impressive in the win registering one goal and four assists. St. Joseph's was led by sophomore Bernadette Smith, who scored four goals in the loss.

Tech returns to action Wednesday, April 14 when the Hokies travel to Charlottesville, Va., to face the University of Virginia. First draw is scheduled for 7 p.m.

O'Doherty, Hubbard; SJU 11 - Smith 4, Moltz 3, Burke, Curry, Sweeney,
Vandergrift.

Assists: VT 9 - Hubbard 4, O'Doherty 2, Will, Mastro, Augustyn; SJU 5 - Burke, Meah, Curry, Constantine, Sweeney.
