American Snaps Women's Lacrosse Winning Streak

Dawn Will broke the Tech record for goals in a season.

April 14, 1998
BLACKSBURG, Va. -- American sophomore Brooke Morgan scored two goals in the final minute to rally the Eagles to a 14-13 victory over Virginia Tech in women's lacrosse action at Tech Park Tuesday afternoon.

The American win stopped Tech's school record win streak at five matches. The loss dropped the Hokies to 7-5 on the season while the Eagles improved to 4-7 with the win.

Trailing 8-6 at the half, American held Tech scoreless through the first 16 minutes of the second half to take a 10-8 lead. The two teams exchanged single goals before the Hokies exploded in the final five minutes of play. Junior Catherine Augustyn (Fairfax, Va.) scored three-consecutive goals and senior Amy Mantooth (Springfield, Va.) added a goal to propel Tech to a 13-11 lead with 2:11 remaining in the match.

American used the last two minutes of play to launch a 3-0 run. Freshman Daione Takao added a goal before Morgan netted two straight to give the Eagles the victory. Morgan finished with a team-high four goals and two assists. Takao and junior midfielder Eleni Vagelatos each added three goals in the win.

Highlighting Tech's attack were Augustyn and sophomore Dawn Will, who finished with four goals each. Will's four scores helped the Phoenix, Md., native break the Tech record for goals in a season. She now has 42, surpassing the old mark of 39 set by Mantooth in 1995.

The Hokies will be looking for a school-record eighth win when they return to action on Wednesday, April 22. Tech will face nationally-ranked rival Virginia in a 3:30 p.m. start at Tech Park.
