April 15, 1999

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. - The No. 2 ranked Cavaliers used a balanced attack to hand Virginia Tech a 16-4 defeat in women's collegiate lacrosse action in Charlottesville Wednesday night. The loss drops the Hokies to 6-3 on the season while Virginia improves to 10-3.

Virginia distributed the wealth early and often in the match as 14 different Wahoos recorded points in the contest. Mills Hook led the way for Uva scoring three goals. Gina Sambus, Laura Lindsay and Amy Fromal each added two goals apiece for the Cavaliers. Fromal also added three assists for a match-high five points.

Catherine Augustyn (Fairfax, Va.) and Dawn Will (Phoenix, Md.) accounted for the Hokies' four goals, each scoring two. Augustyn and senior Chris Mastro (Latham, N.Y.) each added assists in the loss. Goalie Melissa Wagner (Pasadena, Md.) registered 18 saves for the Hokies.

The Hokies struck just 21 seconds into the match as Augustyn found the net on a pass from Mastro. The Wahoos then stormed back, scoring three goals in just 27 seconds. Will stopped the UVa surge with a goal on an assist from Augustyn. However, the Hoos proved too much running out to a 12-2 margin at intermission.

Tech returns to Atlantic 10 action on Saturday when the Hokies face Duquesne. First draw in Rector Fieldhouse is scheduled for noon.
