Women's Lacrosse Falls To Duke

No. 5 Blue Devils set school record for goals.

DURHAM, N.C. -- The Duke women's lacrosse team, ranked No. 5 in the country, collected a school-record 21 goals on Tuesday evening in a 21-10 victory against Virginia Tech. The Blue Devils collected 11 goals in the first half alone to cruise past the Hokies. With the win, Duke improves to 10-3. Virginia Tech falls to 7-5.

Virginia Tech scored the first goal of the match at 26:36 when Suzy Funston found the nets. Duke answered with a pair of goals, one from sophomore Claire Finn and another from freshman Kate Kaiser. Duke sophomore Kate Soulier added a goal, while Virginia Tech collected two scores to knot the game at 3-3 with 17:04 left in the opening period.

Duke took over from there, outscoring the Hokies 8-3 to take an 11-6 advantage at the intermission. Duke junior All-America Tricia Martin, the team's leading scorer, sparked the attack with three goals during the stretch.

In the second half, the Blue Devils scored five unanswered goals, including two from freshman Kelly Dirks, to push the lead to 16-6. Duke continued its offensive showcase by outscoring the Hokies 5-4 in the remaining 23 minutes of action. Finn added her team-high fourth goal in the stretch, while Kaiser picked up her third goal of the game as well.
