BLACKSBURG, Va. - The Virginia Tech women's lacrosse team lost their first Atlantic Coast Conference match to the No. 9 Maryland Terrapins Saturday afternoon by a final score of 14-7.
The loss drops the Hokies to 3-6 overall and 0-1 in league play while Maryland improves to 7-4 on the season and 1-2 in the ACC.
Sophomore Britt Faulkner (Ellicott City, Md.) tallied a season high four goals for the home squad.
The Terrapins' Katie Doolittle amassed six points on five goals and one assist while Annie Collins totaled five points on three goals and two assists in the win.
Tech, down 5-1 at the intermission, netted two of the first three goals in the second period, but Collins and Doolittle each scored a goal in just over two minutes of action to keep the Hokies at bay. Faulkner accounted for both Tech goals to start the half.
With 17:49 remaining, sophomore Lindsay Pieper (Rensselear, N.Y.) found the back of the net for her only score of the day, bringing Tech to within four at 8-4. Junior Stephanie Jones (Arnold, Md.) connected on a shot at the 14:46 mark, helping the Hokies comeback attempt.
Maryland then ran off six of the final eight goals to finish the scoring. In the final 10 minutes of action, Doolittle provided two of her goals while Collins added one for the Terps. Tech's Kate Schilling (Richmond, Va.) took a pass from Natasha Fuchs (Bay Shore, N.Y.) at the 8:29 mark and beat Maryland's goalie, Kirah Miles, for the score. Faulkner tallied the Hokies' final goal of the day with 55 seconds remaining.
In the first half, Maryland held Tech's offense scoreless until just before halftime when Faulkner accounted for the Hokies' lone goal of the first half with 19 seconds left.
Defensively, sophomore Nikki Schiavone (Baltimore, Md.) stopped 10 Maryland shot attempts while Miles had eight saves for the visitors. Pieper forced a team-high three turnovers while junior Katie Boyle (Cherry Hill, N.J.) and freshman Kady McBrearty (Alexandria, Va.) picked up three ground balls. Pieper pulled down a game-high seven draw controls, as the Hokies held a 14-9 advantage in that category over the Terps.
The goal by Jones moved her into a tie for 10th place with Sam Sybert on Tech's all-time goals scored list. The point also moved her into a tie for 10th on the career points scored list with Karen Diacont. Jones moved into fourth place on the draw controls list, surpassing Sybert. Pieper stands in ninth for career draw controls. Fuchs is in sole possession of second place for assists in a single season. She now has 22 on the year, just three short of tying Suzy Funston's record of 25 that was set in 1996.
The Hokies look to get back on track on Wednesday, Apr. 6, when they step out of conference and host Davidson in a 7 p.m., contest at the Virginia Tech Lacrosse Stadium.
