Top-Ranked Virginia Pushes Past Hokies

Cav's take a 13-2 women's lacrosse decision at Tech.

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Four different Virginia players scored multiple goals as the top-ranked Cavaliers handed Virginia Tech a 13-2 defeat in women's lacrosse action at Tech Park on Wednesday afternoon.

Sophomore Meredith Elwell led all scorers with three goals while Jessica Hull, Peggy Boutilier and Kara Ariza each had two goals as Virginia improved to 13-2 on the season. Tech falls to 7-6 overall after losing its second straight.

The match remained scoreless through the first 15 minutes of play until Elwell gave Virginia a quick 2-0 lead on consecutive goals. Elwell added her third goal of the day while Ariza and Mills Hook scored to give the Cavaliers a 5-0 margin at the intermission.

UVa raced out to an 8-0 lead in the second half before Dawn Will netted Tech's first goal with 18:31 remaining. Will scored Tech's only other goal of the afternoon on an assist from junior Catherine Augustyn with 9:17 remaining. The Cavaliers grabbed five more goals to remain unbeaten in the series with Tech.

Despite the huge deficit, the Hokies received an impressive performance from goalie Melissa Wagner. Wagner played all 60 minutes in goal for the Hokies, finishing the afternoon with 16 saves.

The Hokies conclude the 1998 season on Saturday, April 25, when they entertain Hofstra. First draw at Tech Park is scheduled for noon. The Cavaliers face fifth-ranked Temple in Charlottesville on Saturday.
