Women's Lacrosse Completes Best Season in School History

Hokies beat Hofstra 13-8.

April 25, 1998

BLACKSBURG, Va. -- Sophomore Courtney Hubbard scored four goals as Virginia Tech closed its season with a 13-8 victory over Hofstra in women's lacrosse action at Tech Park Saturday afternoon.

The win propelled the Hokies to an 8-6 overall mark, the best finish by a Tech team in the program's four-year existence. With the loss, Hofstra falls to 9-6 on the year.

Tech used a 6-1 run in the first 10 minutes of the second half to break open a 3-3 halftime score. Hubbard (Fairfax, Va.) sparked the Hokies with three goals in the run while fellow sophomore Dawn Will (Phoenix, Md.) added two goals.

The Flying Dutchwomen mounted a comeback with four goals in the last 20 minutes, but Tech senior Amy Mantooth (Springfield, Va.) grabbed two of her three goals in the match down the stretch to insure the win.

Hofstra jumped out to an early 2-0 lead in the contest on two straight goals from midfielder Kristin Streeker. Tech evened the match with goals from Eileen Miller (Broomall, Pa.) and Hubbard. Streeker struck again with 6:25 remaining in the half to give HU the 3-2 advantage. Mantooth scored with 1:15 left in the half to even the halftime score at 3-3.

Among the national leaders in goals, Streeker didn't disappoint, scoring a match-high five goals in the loss. She was aided by freshman Kelly Dobson with two goals.

In addition to Hubbard's four goals, the Hokies got multiple goals from Mantooth with three, while Miller and Will each had two scores in the win. Tech goalie Melissa Wagner also had an impressive afternoon, stopping 16 shots while allowing only six goals.
