Augustyn Goal Lifts Hokies Past Vanderbilt

Women's Lacrosse gets 14-13 win.

Blacksburg, Va. - Senior Catherine Augustyn's goal with 11 seconds remaining lifted Virginia Tech to a 14-13 victory in women's collegiate lacrosse action at Rector Field House Wednesday afternoon.

Augustyn (Fairfax, Va.), who was one of three Tech players with three goals on the afternoon, broke the 13-13 stalemate after Hokies' senior Sue Cowperthwait (Media, Pa.) forced a Vanderbilt turnover in front of the Commodores' goal.

The win propels Tech to a 9-6 record on the season while the Commodores conclude their season at 5-10. The Hokies' nine wins set a new Tech record for wins in a season, eclipsing last year's 8-6 mark.

The Hokies established a quick 3-1 lead before allowing Vanderbilt the first of six ties in the match. Tech put together a 4-1 run in last six minutes of the first half to lead, 11-8, at intermission. The Commodores used a 4-1 run of their own to tie the contest at 12-12 with 21 minutes remaining in regulation.

Tech goalkeeper Melissa Wagner (Pasadena, Md.) and Vanderbilt goalie Emily Lough then controlled the tempo over a 17-minute stretch as neither team could penetrate the net. Augustyn snapped the tie with 4:01 remaining to give the Hokies' a 13-12 advantage. Augustyn's last-second heroics were set up with 1:12 to go as Vandy's Kinsey Osberg notched her first goal to even the contest at 13-13.

In addition to Augustyn, sophomore Karen Diacont (Gambrills, Md.) and junior Maeghan O'Doherty also scored three goals in the winning effort. The Hokies also received a school record 28 saves from Wagner in goal.Vanderbilt was led by sophomore Andrea Legath, who notched three goals in the loss.

Tech returns to action on Saturday, May 1 in the first round of the Atlantic 10 Championship in Philadelphia, Pa.. The Hokies face Massachusetts in a 2:30 p.m. draw at Temple University.
